namibia

In December and January of 1996 / 1997, my Dad and I went to Namibia.

A big tall termite mound (called a termitarium) in the Kalahari Desert near Outjo. Callan rides the termitarium into the sunset. In the left hand, what was visible above the surface. In the right hand, the root underground. Juan Carlos in background. Laura Lee captures a mongoose from the troop that roamed our camp. Callan with Jackal
Millipede on Callan's shirt. One day, we cut open a termitarium to investigate its structure and search for the queen. The termites grow fungus combs in their underground nest, and they harvest their food from these. Termites rebuild their termitarium (nest) after we poke holes in it for our sensors. Massive thorns, with my own human hand for scale.
One night, a massive emergence of moths. Springbok, a common antelope of the African plains. A slow chameleon that walked into camp one day. Crocodile. Elephant.
Callan hiking across Elim Dune, Namib Desert. The noble gemsbok -- common and elegant. The Hoba Meteorite, largest meteorite on Earth (in the middle of the photograph-- follow my pointing finger). One of two leopards that crossed the road in front of us, Etosha National Park. A snorting wildebeest that interrupted a hike in Daan Viljoen National Park.
